The Miracle

That time will come, one day you’ll see – when we can all be friends.” ~Queen

I tell people that I believe in magic all the time. But what is magic, exactly? Where does it come from? What do I mean when I talk about magic, and when I talk about opening your heart to it and letting it flow through your life?

Magic is the creative force of the universe. It’s love, and life. It’s art from the Muse, and dreams from the Sandman. It’s God’s gift to us; it’s the Universe’s gift to itself. It’s our gift to each other. It’s everywhere, and it’s free. In fact, it can’t be bought or sold, it has to be given freely, without cost or obligation. Otherwise, it’s not really magic, it’s tainted energy. Magic is the stuff from which miracles are forged. Magic is like the Force from Star Wars.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Star Wars geek, and that spills over into my spirituality. I just love the concept of “The Force” and the teachings of Master Yoda and the other Jedi. So quoth Obi Wan: “The Force is…an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.”

Entire books have been written about the Force and the spirituality of Star Wars so I won’t rehash it here. The point is, we’re surrounded by loving, healing, and peaceful energy all the time. It surrounds us and penetrates us…binds us all together. It binds us to each other, and it binds us to God, no matter how you envision Him/Her/It to be. We are one.

Magic is this overflowing, beautiful, and radiant energy that empowers us, comforts us, and heals us. You can call it Divine Love, or the Universe, or the Force, or Mana, or whatever. It doesn’t matter what you call it…it only matters that you feel it. It matters that you experience it, and that you share it with everyone you come in contact with. It’s beauty, compassion, and kindness. It’s peacefulness and harmony. It’s all “I’d like to buy the world a coke, and teach it how to sing” goodness. It’s love for everyone, everything, and even for life itself. It’s the thrill of being alive, of being present and aware. It’s being in love with yourself. In a word, it’s magic.

I opened this post with one of my favorite songs by Queen, The Miracle. It sings the praises of all the magic that is happening around us each and every day. The miracles of human innovation such as test-tube babies and the Mona Lisa, but also the miracles of nature. “If every leaf on every tree could tell a story that would be a miracle.” Yes, yes, yes! A thousand times yes! Flowers blooming in Spring, Snow falling in Winter. Falling rain, rushing wind. Children laughing and playing. Holding hands with a lover and watching the sunset together. A friend’s shoulder when you need a safe place to cry. Warm sunshine and cool breezes, ice cream and cake.

All of that is miraculous. All of it, a miracle. And miracles are just another expression of love…of magic.

The magic is there, just waiting for you to open up to it. Do you dare to believe? Can you afford not to?

Love always,

Jay

  1. Well said Jay,

Magic is all around. We just need to open are eyes, not take everything for granted, and we’ll see it. Just think of the human brain: it’s more complex than the entire known universe. Now that’s a miracle to me!

Once I stood in front of a Modigliani painting and for a moment every cell in my body felt IT. That Modigliani had once stood in front of this painting, feeling, contemplating, thinking, painting… and for a moment we were just separated by time, he and I … as if you could fold time and there we would be, the both of us, occupying the same space, the same moment… it was magic.
I’m also amazed by blades of grass, cats, the ability of music to make me cry, and how I can write something and it unfolds out of my pen as if by… magic.

I believe Jay :-) The more I open my eyes and acknowledge the everyday miracles we usually take for granted, the more I experience miracles I like to think of as being especially for me.

I hit the internet this morning looking for inspiration for my thought this Monday, and I’ve found it right here. So thanks for that! :-)

Love this post, Jay. It is beautiful. Magic is something that I just started embracing about a year ago. I have always told the Littles how important it was to believe, but I myself was a skeptic. Now I live and breath this Magic and I don’t care who knows it. Thank you for sharing the Magic. The more who embrace it, the better this world will be.

@Eduard – The human brain is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. All the neurons and synapses firing in perfect harmony to allow us to think, create, love, feel…it’s a miracle in itself. Thanks for bringing that up!

@Cyberia – Beautiful art has a way of crossing borders, dispelling illusions, and bridging gaps in time, in space, and even in philosophies and modes of thinking. I’m so happy that you had such a beautiful, intimate experience with Modigliani.

@Hilda – Looking for inspiration and finding it – That’s magic in itself, no? But yes, the more we look for magic and miracles, the more we see them all around us.

@Nicola – I’m so glad that you believe. You’re right…the more you believe, the more you receive. So stay open, and the magic will continue to flow.

@Jill – Each of the Littles are a bit of magic themselves, and no magic is stronger than a mother’s love, so I imagine your house is just about as magical a place as exists in this world. Thank you for sharing your magic with all of us.

    Jay,
Such a bright and beautiful post. Reminds me of the song, Do You Believe In Magic, by the Lovin’ Spoonful (gotta be old like me to remember that one).
The sheer intelligence that underlies life is magic and mystery and is right under our nose, right before our eyes, right inside each cell. It’s right here in your blog, that love. You have dished it out to us on a lovely platter, and we are all feasting on it.
    Thank you.

  8. Aww… this is beautiful, Jay! I’m all for magic. Your post reminds me of the Goethe quote:

“Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen.”

Magic is real and limitless and always available, if only we are willing to believe… to open our hearts to infinite possibilities. Now I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy… what to do with it? Hm… coke float? ;)

  9. Dawn says:

YES YES YES….I just wish more people could understand all of this…I have tried so hard to embrace this and spread it to those we love. Unfortunately, it does’nt alwasy work like that. My son, kind of gets it, my daughter has a hard time with it…My husband and mother…just don’t won’t can’t get it.

This is a great post…Thank you for sharing.

  10. Hey Jay!

This Magic = the love of life itself. That you know, unconditionally, that this life you have here, for all its ups and downs, is much better than being six feet under with a funeral procession marching over your grave.

I mean – how can you *not* love life? It’s like a playground of love and energy and other grand things.

This song reflects my love of life:

    Burning through the sky yeah
    200 hundred degrees
That’s why they call me Mr Fahrenheit
I’m traveling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

    Don’t stop me now
I’m having such a good time, I’m having a ball
    Don’t stop me now
If you wanna have a good time, just give me a call
    Don’t stop me now
‘Cause I’m having a good time
I don’t wanna stop at all

The line I loved at the end of the video is, “The time will come, one day you’ll see, when can all be be friends.” Maybe that’s Queen’s version of, “I’d like to buy the world a Coke…” ;)

You know I love this, Jay, and reading your words gave me the warm-fuzzy-goose bumps. I’m all about Gia theory, thriving with this one interdependent, living, breathing organism of this Earth.

@Julie – That’s actually one of the songs I considered using for this post, so I’m happy it made it’s way into the comments. Another one was America’s “You Can Do Magic”. Thank you for sharing the magic of synchronicity with us!

@Lisis – That’s a great quote! And a coke float is just about the perfect way to celebrate the warm fuzzies. It’s coke…AND…ice cream!!! Like, together! If that ain’t magic, ain’t nuthin’ magic!

@Dawn – People only accept magic when they’re ready for it. It’s like the old saying – You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. All you can do is keep showing them love, keep feeding them the magic, and hope that the Universe gives them a metaphorical thump on the head to open their eyes (and hearts). This is me, sending you lots of love and hugs to help you touch them.

@Brett – That’s ANOTHER of my favorite Queen songs! And equally appropriate for this post. Coolness! And also, life = playground of love and energy…man, that’s just about perfect. Thanks for sharing your awesomeness with us!

@Lori – I have it on my bookshelf! Please, allow me to mail it to you. It really is good, though. The author takes a few liberties with the quotes from Star Wars, but it really is a great introduction to Buddhism/Eastern Philosophy…especially for geeks like us :) And thank *you* for spreading the love. We can all use more of it, I think.

  13. @ Lori: I know Jay just called you a geek! ;)

  14. Ah, magic! One of my favorite words and better yet, ideas to live by. Funny enough, last June when I came up with a working title for my book, it contained the word magic. If I have my druthers, the final published piece will, too.
And, even funnier still (but this is magic at work, in a sense), I was talking to a friend just yesterday about how Star Wars was a hugely spiritual movie. I never realized it until last summer when I watched it again. Light versus dark entities, sensing disturbances, levitation, etc. Wild, wild stuff!

All I can say for 2010 is “More magic please!” So far, so good; this year feels ripe for the picking where owning our power is concerned.

    Incredible love to you, Jay!

    Jay,
Amazing post. Amazing comments. Can’t help but *believe* just reading it all:)
“Magic is this overflowing, beautiful, and radiant energy that empowers us, comforts us, and heals us”….I definitely want some of that:)
Actually in life, I’m excellent at working it, not quite as good at receiving it–in my little life it always seems to be conditional somehow…ah, but I still believe wholeheartedly in Possibility, Miracles, Grace, Flow….I let the sunrise touch my heart and the moonbeams soothe my soul *magical* and that is what I share with those around me.
    Much peace…
    Joy

  17. Jay says:

@Joy – All the magic that you share, all the love that you give – may it be returned to you a thousand times over. And it will be returned to you. As long as you let the sunrise touch your heart and the moonbeams soothe your soul, the magic will be there waiting for you. And when you’re ready to receive it, it’ll burst right through you in the most delicious way, and you’ll laugh out loud at the happiness and pleasure it brings. Promise.

    Hi Jay:

Awesome post once again…first off I loved the tune. Back in the days when I worked at a record store, this CD came in and I was blown away by the great guitar work and very interesting mix during the solo of this song. I enjoyed listening as I read your post…which was incredibly well-written. You are right about miracles and magic…I am thankful that I have moments when I can feel and sense the miracle of life and the magic that surrounds us. I don’t always feel this way, but when I do it is a great feeling. Thanks for reminding us about this magic in our lives.

  20. Dude, you are talking my language. :)

The Force or magic or whatever someone wants to call it is always at work. There are days when the beauty of it is just so much, I could explode from the joy. Those are the days when I just want to hug everyone. For life is truly beautiful!

  21. Love this post, Jay! I sometimes ache because I feel all that beautiful magic surrounding and interconnecting us – it’s like I can’t contain it, it’s so huge and beautiful.

I feel so blessed because I get to utilize and witness the real results of that magic all the time, when I do intuitive readings, teach my students, and witness miracles of manifestation.

I agree that we can no longer afford to ignore magic … we are living in magical times where mysteries are becoming highly accessible.

@Caroline – If I can be half the miracle that you are, Caroline, then i will consider my life a success. You have such a way with images, with the photos that you share and the words you write. If anyone is an expression of magic, it’s you.

@Tim – Yeah, to me, all the queen albums are magic. Such technical proficiency coupled with genuine emotion is rare, especially in rock bands. I am constantly amazed at the ability of music to awaken people to the magic of life. I’m glad that you have moments where you can feel it. I wish you many more such moments in the future, my friend!

@Nadia – Hmm. Well, if I’m speaking your language, then I certainly must be on the right track! I know what you mean about wanting to hug everyone. I have days like that, too. It’s awesome, isn’t it?

@Andrea – That’s so wonderful that you get to witness magic everyday, and even more wonderful that you get to show others how to experience it for themselves. Truly, the world needs more people like you.

  25. Hi Jay,

Yes, I believe in magic. I believe that for all the things that we cannot explain, we use that word. Other people also use the words miracle, supernatural, paranormal, baloney, and so on. But I think magic will do just fine. We really can’t explain everything in the universe using our science no matter how hard we try. However, we can do it if we use our spirit… and I’ve always believed that once you have penetrated your “self” deep enough, you will find all the answers that you’ve been looking for. Now, that’s magic. =D

Anyway, I enjoyed your post. Reminds me of an occult practice called Magick. hehe.

  28. Jay says:

@Walter – Yes, you’re very existence is magical. Everyone’s life is magical! To think that two cells come together, and then become one, and then grow and develop into an organism as complex as a human being…that’s perhaps the greatest magic of them all.

@Hayden – Thanks, but i think you give me far too much credit. I, for one, don’t think it’s as awesome as you’re whole “rockin the universe” thing, which I have totally stolen from you and use daily, btw. :)

@Ryhen – Yes, finding the answers inside of you is truly a magical experience. I know firsthand, cause i have found them within me. Or, at least some of them. Still looking for others, but at least now I’m looking in the right place :)

@Lisa – I snuck it in there on a Saturday. It’s easy to miss when I do that :) Thank you for saying it’s beautiful. You’re one of the many teachers who have brought me to this place in my life, and I can’t thank you enough for that. Your compliments are like candy for me.

…Never thought of the implications of it being the same juicy goodness dubbed “FORCE” in the greatist movie of all time, but now that I have, everything feels and looks slightly more alive as though it has been tickled by a rainbow under a waterfall near a secluded village in rural Japan. Magical.

I’d love to hear what a leaf has to say. Wonder if all leaves say the same thing and in the same way? Do African leaves have different accents to those in the Bronx. Are there even trees in the Bronx?!
